Coast Guard identifies victims from Port Manatee accident
The U.S. Coast Guard has released the identities of two crewmen who died in an accident last Thursday aboard a vessel berthed at Port Manatee.
The Coast Guard said the victims from the refrigerated cargo ship 'Sol do Brasil' were chief mate Rene Otto, 35, from Germany, and third mate Jesus Ugaz Aguilar, 24, from Peru.
According to an Associated Press report, a preliminary Coast Guard investigation indicates the men died from suffocation while in the hold of the vessel. After the accident, the Coast Guard ordered the crew to receive training on procedures for entering enclosed cargo hold, and watched the crewmembers perform those tasks. Safety equipment on the vessel was also checked, a Coast Guard spokesman added.
The ship, which was bringing in frozen orange juice concentrate from Brazil, was allowed to leave the port on Tuesday.
The Coast Guard said an investigation into the deaths is continuing.
