Coast Guard: Tugs guiding disabled LNG tanker

The U.S. Coast Guard said a liquefied natural gas tanker that had lost propulsion at around 3 a.m. Monday and was drifting off of Cape Cod was under tow.

Teekay Corp., which operates the tanker Catalunya Spirit, contracted four tugboats and three technical representatives to assist the tanker. The tugboats Freedom and Liberty arrived on scene with the tanker about 10 p.m. Monday. The Freedom placed the Catalunya Spirit under tow, stopping the tanker’s southeasterly movement, and is slowly heading west to a temporary offshore location, while conducting repairs.

The tug Iona McAllister is also on scene standing by. The salvage tug, Atlantic Salvor, is expected to arrive this afternoon to assist as necessary.

The Coast Guard said the ship had not suffered any structural damage, it continues to monitor the ship and that a cutter, Escanaba is on scene.
