Coast Guard working on spill off Puerto Rico The U.S. Coast Guard is implementing a recovery operation and investigation into an oil product spill of unknown origin off the southwest coast of Puerto Rico.
   Teams have recovered more than 100 cubic yards — the equivalent of five full dumpsters — of oil product and contaminated debris.
   The spill was originally spotted last Thursday, and the Coast Guard dispatched helicopters to survey the situation, following up by ordering clean-up contractors to the area.
   Investigators also looked into a possible spill near Mayaguez Harbor on the West Coast, but the Coast Guard has determined there is no spill at that location.
   Coast Guard pollution investigators are continuing their probe into the origin of the material that has been spilled into the water in the Guanica and Guayanilla area, and the emergency Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund has been increased to $2.25 million to continue clean-up and recovery efforts of the material.
