Columbia River will be deepened next spring

The Army Corps of Engineers said Thursday that dredging will begin next year to deepen the lower Columbia River by three feet.

The “Consolidated Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2005,” signed by President Bush Dec. 8, included $9 million for the Columbia River channel improvement project, enabling the Corps to begin dredging to the new depth of 43 feet in the spring.

Work will commence in the Portland, Ore., and Vancouver, Wash. areas.
