The TACs advise the department on technical aspects of its export controls for dual-use commodities and technology and on the administration of those controls. Dual-use commodities are those products and technologies that can be used for both commercial and military purposes.
Industry representatives on the TACs come from firms producing a broad range of goods, technologies and software presently controlled for national security, non-proliferation, foreign policy and short supply reasons. TAC members are appointed for terms of not more than four consecutive years. TACs meet about four times a year.
TAC members must also obtain secret-level clearances prior to appointment. These clearances are necessary so that members may have access to classified information needed to formulate recommendations to the Commerce Department.
The department has TACs covering information systems, materials, materials processing equipment, regulations and procedures, sensors and instrumentation, and transportation and related equipment.
For more information about TAC participation, contact Yvette Springer, the Commerce Department's committee liaison officer, by e-mail at Yspringer@bis.doc.gov.
