Commissioners delays decision on Port Everglades wastewater contracts

Commissioners delays decision on Port Everglades wastewater contracts The Broward County commissioners, who have authority over Port
Everglades, have delayed a decision on a contract for wastewater removal
from ships until the county can clear up questions about the ownership of a
company seeking the franchise.
According to a report in the Miami Herald, the commissioners held off on
giving a franchise contract to Everglades Waste Removal Services, which is a
spin-off from the family-owned company Cliff Berry Inc.
That company did environmental cleanup for more than 30 years, but the
commissioners declined to renew the contract in February after an audit
found Cliff Berry Inc. had shortchanged the county in fees over five years,
the Herald report said. The company subsequently repaid the county $230,000.
The commissioners wanted assurances that Cliff Berry Sr.’s son, Cliff
Berry II, is not involved with Everglades Waste Removal. The younger Berry
was arrested in December for allegedly participating in a conspiracy to
steal jet fuel from Miami International Airport when trucks were supposed to
be picking up rainwater contaminated with jet fuel.
An earlier Herald report said Cliff Berry Sr. started Everglades Waste
Removal Services with himself as the only corporate officer.
