A Seattle-based company has begun marketing an online service called www.findaport.net that it said would help shippers, forwarders and other users locate the closest airport or seaport to virtually any community in the world.

On the online subscription service results are presented along with distance information, port Web sites and a map for visual confirmation.

It uses a database containing 2.9 million maps and records for cities, airports and seaports. Bob Schwieger, president of Findaport.net Inc., said users can retrieve information in seconds that may have taken even a seasoned professional up to 15 or 20 minutes using normal methods. The service can be licensed for use on intranets or public Web sites.
