Con-Way to institute health care surcharge

Con-Way to institute health care surcharge    Con-Way Transportation Services said it will start charging shippers a 2 percent surcharge Jan. 1 to help off-set increases in health insurance for its employees.
   Con-Way, a super regional less-than-truckload carrier with national coverage, said the surcharge will be applied after all customer-specific discounts are factored into the linehaul charge. The Ann Arbor-Mich.-based motor carrier said it will also make its workers contribute 1 percent of their salaries to health care costs.
   We've just asked our employees to help pay for a small part of their health care benefits. It's only right that we ask our customers to participate as well,' said President Gerald Detter said in a statement.
   Con-Way is the trucking arm of transportation conglomerate CNF Inc., Palo Alto, Calif.
