Construction begins in DP World Peru terminal

Construction begins in DP World Peru terminal Construction has begun on Dubai Ports World’s new container terminal in the Peruvian port in Callao, near the capital Lima, the Dubai-based terminal operator said Wednesday.
   The terminal is in the Muelle Sur area of Callao Port, where DP World won a 30-year concession to build and operate the new terminal from June 2006.
   The first phase of the project will see about $210 million invested in two berths with 660 meters of quay and 22 hectares of yard space, capable of handling vessels of 5,500 TEUs and a capacity of 800,000 TEUs. The first phase is scheduled to be operational in the second half of 2009. Further development will be phased in line with demand, with total capacity projected to reach around 1.3 million TEUs.
   The development will also see improvements to port-related infrastructure, including land access, widening of the port's sea entrance, navigation aids, security and protection systems, and the development of logistic centers.
   DP World owns 70 percent of the development company, with the balance held by a local Peruvian partner, the Unimar group of companies.
