Construction contract awarded at Cochin transshipment terminal Dubai Ports World Cochin last week awarded a $150 million construction contract for the first phase of its International Container Transshipment Terminal at Vallarpadam in Cochin, the Dubai-based terminal operator said.
   Construction is expected to begin in December and finish within two years. The first phase of development involves the building of 600 meters of quay, an on-dock railhead serviced by rail-mounted gantry cranes, 30 hectares of yard space, and the acquisition of six super post-Panamax cranes. The terminal's first phase will have a handling capacity of 1 million TEUs.
   DP World, which operates the current container terminal in Cochin, has a concession to operate the Vallarpadam terminal for 30 years. All container activity will migrate from the existing terminal to the new one when it is finished.
