Seaboard Marine said Wednesday its ship Seaboard Intrepid lost about 30 containers in a storm south of Key West, Fla., on Jan. 25 while en route to Honduras.
Seaboard said salvage crews are working to retrieve the lost containers, most of which were empty. No crewmembers were injured.
The ship returned to the Port of Miami Wednesday night. It said damages to the vessel itself appeared minimal.
Personnel from Seaboard shipping are determining the contents of the overboard containers. The ship is unloading its cargo under U.S. Coast Guard supervision, and the company said it is arranging for additional vessels to carry the cargo to Central America.
The Coast Guard said one of its jets located a few of the containers floating on Monday, but during a second flight on Tuesday, no containers were located. It advised mariners in the area to proceed with caution and report any container sightings to the Coast Guard.
Meanwhile, Horizon Lines reported that Jan. 21 its containership Horizon Hunter ran into a powerful storm in the Pacific in a voyage from Oakland to Honolulu. Six containers went overboard and toppled several stacks on deck.
The ship arrived in Honolulu with several boxes precariously balanced.
