The LT Cortesia was refloated by three powerful tugs and pulled stern first off the Varne Bank sandbank. The ship then made its way to anchorage in the Downs about 10 miles east of Dover, where it is undergoing inspections by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency as well as the vessel’s classification society Germanischer Lloyd.
“We are very pleased that the salvage operation has resulted in such a large vessel being quickly refloated and removed from a potentially very hazardous situation,” said Hugh Shaw, the new Secretary of State’s Representative (SOSREP) in the United Kingdom.
