The Evergreen Line containership Ever Radiant ran aground about two miles east of Tybee Island, Ga., about 11 a.m. Wednesday, but was freed with two tugs at 1:15 p.m., and the river was reopened at 3:20 p.m.
The ship reportedly lost propulsion while leaving the Port of Savannah in the Bloody Point Range.
There were no reports of pollution from the grounding. The ship was ordered to remain at anchor until the problem causing the incident is identified and repaired.
The 4,229-TEU Ever Radiant is used in a Far East/U.S. East Coast Service that transits the Panama Canal.
The Coast Guard said it received information indicating three deep draft vessels were delayed as a result of this incident.
In November, a different container ship, the MSC Korea, also lost power while transiting out of the river. The Coast Guard said that incident was traced to a faulty indicator light that caused a short circuit.
