Continental applies to DOT to start Newark/Shanghai flight

Continental Airlines Monday submitted its application to the U.S. Department of Transportation to start the first nonstop U.S. carrier service between New York (Newark Liberty International Airport) and Shanghai in the spring of 2009.

Continental plans to provide through flight service between Cleveland, Ohio, and Shanghai.

“Continental again congratulates the DOT on securing the multiple rights for additional competitive U.S. airline service to China, which Continental intends to utilize in 2009, by offering daily nonstop service in the most significant U.S.-China market that lacks daily nonstop U.S. carrier service,” said Larry Kellner, the airline’s chairman and chief executive officer.

Continental said it would operate the daily service using Boeing 777 aircraft.
