Corpus Christi receives TWIC launch date

Corpus Christi receives TWIC launch date Enrollment for the Transportation Worker Identification Credential at the Port of Corpus Christi in Texas will begin Nov. 1, the Transportation Security Administration announced on Friday.
   The TWIC card is designed as a universal identity card with embedded fingerprint that workers can use for unescorted access to secure areas of any port in the nation.
   The Port of Wilmington, Del., on Oct. 16 became the first port to begin enrolling its workers for the card. Corpus Christi was designated to follow suit in early November, according to the TSA’s rollout schedule for the first dozen ports announced last month. Friday’s notice provided the exact date that TWIC will begin there.
   Each worker must undergo a criminal and terrorist background check, provide a fingerprint and purchase a tamper-proof, biometric card that can be automatically read to verify identity. Requirements for manual checking of the cards will be phased in next year while the agencies continue to test biometric reader technology for automated entry.
