COSCO Ports, PSA launch new berth in Singapore

The COSCO-PSA Terminal (CPT) in Singapore has opened a new berth as alliance services continue to increase volumes at the Southeast Asian port hub.
COSCO Shipping Ports and PSA have opened a new berth at Southeast Asia’s major hub.
COSCO SHIPPING Ports, the port terminal operator arm of China’s COSCO Shipping, and PSA Corp. have launched a new berth at COSCO-PSA Terminal (CPT) in Singapore.
“With the strategic reshuffle of shipping routes by OCEAN Alliance, launched in April 2017, throughput will continue to grow at Singapore’s Port,” the companies said in a joint statement. “With a view to meet the new requirements from shipping alliances and mega-vessels, as well as maximize the utilization rate of the berths, COSCO SHIPPING Ports has decided to commence operations at the third berth on 1 January 2018.”

The new berth will be supported by an automated yard for more efficient berthing arrangements, productivity increases and service capability and quality, the port said. As a result, the berth is expected to increase the handling capacity of CPT to 3,000,000 TEUs annually.
The launch follows a supplemental agreement signed in March 2016, which replaced the original two berths in CPT located at Pasir Panjang Terminal 1 with three new and larger berths at Pasir Panjang Terminal 5. The first two berths commenced operations in January 2017, with an annual handling capacity of 2 million TEUs, said CPT.
