Costa Rican groups protest CAFTA

Costa Rican groups protest CAFTA Tens of thousands of protesters opposed to the adoption of the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA) took to the streets of San Jose, Costa Rica Monday, according to an Associated Press report.
Costa Rica is the only country among the six DR-CAFTA signatories that has not ratified the agreement with the United States. The report said opponents of the agreement, which has the strong support of new President Oscar Arias, included union members, farmers and political activists. Union opponents included employees of the state-run telecommunications company. If adopted, DR-CAFTA would increase competition without the telecommunications and agriculture industries in Costa Rica.
