Costco plans new DC to serve Mid-Atlantic

Costco, one of the country’s largest big box retailers, plans to build a 525,066-square-foot distribution center on an 84-acre site near New Market, Md. to serve its stores throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

According to the Nov. 21 Frederick News-Post, the building, once fully built, will include 344 truck doors, offer both dry and cold storage, and handle about 775 tractor trailers a day.

The newspaper also reported that 80 percent of the truck trips from the warehouse will travel east-west on Interstate 70, and the rest will head south on I-270. In addition to Maryland, the warehouse will serve Costco stores in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

“Final authorization for the project to go ahead requires the (Frederick County Planning Commission) to separately approve a new road network for the industrial park,” in which Costco will build the warehouse, the News-Post said.
