The company will also move its Americas headquarters office from Mexico City to Houston, 'underlining the importance of the tanker market.'
Coyne replaces Fritz Grannemann, who retires this year, and will report to Hermann J. Klein, member of the GL executive board.
Coyne was vice president of maritime compliance, quality, global crewing, ship vetting and operations for General Maritime Management, a provider of crude oil transportation. The company operates 43 tankers on charter to various oil companies and traders.
Coyne has also held positions with Exxon and Universe Tankships in vessel operations, newbuilding construction supervision and at sea. He's a graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y.
In addition to Houston, GL's Maritime Services in the United States are represented through offices in New York, Jacksonville, Miami, New Orleans and Los Angeles. The company's services include newbuilding supervision, ship in service inspections, security and quality certifications, and training. Since September 2007, GL has been authorized to participate in the U.S. Coast Guard's Alternate Compliance Program (ACP), one of three non-American classification societies to have this authorization.
