Adrion replaces Ray Miles, who resigned as CEO Dec. 31, following the completion of Hapag-Lloyd's acquisition of CP Ships at the year's end.
Adrion, who joined Hapag in 1957, will continue as CEO of Hapag-Lloyd Container Line and as an executive board member of Hapag-Lloyd AG.
The board of CP Ships Ltd. has also appointed Ulrich Kranich chief financial officer. He succeeds Ian Webber, who will leave his post at the end of January. Kranich has been with Hapag-Lloyd since 1975.
'We are pooling the top expertise at CP Ships and Hapag-Lloyd,' said Michael Behrendt, chairman of the CP Ships board of directors and also chairman of Hapag-Lloyd's executive board. The integration of the two companies should be completed by 2007, Behrendt said in a statement.
In addition to Behrendt and Adrion, the CP Ships board of directors includes Brian Westlake, an attorney based in Toronto, and Holger Oetjen, manager of Hapag-Lloyd Canada.
Hapag-Lloyd and CP Ships have a combined fleet of about 140 vessels with a total capacity of 410,000 TEUs. Hapag-Lloyd is part of TUI AG, based in Hanover-Berlin, Germany.
