Crowley adds 400 53-foot boxes

   Crowley Maritime Corp. said to better serve customers shipping cargo between the U.S. mainland and Puerto Rico it has acquired 400 additional 53-foot dry high-cube containers and 375 53-foot chassis.
   “These new containers, which provide optimum value for shippers with low density, high-cube cargo, are particularly needed now as we enter the peak holiday shipping season,” said Crowley’s John Douglass, senior vice president and general manager for Puerto Rico and Caribbean services, in a statement.
   Over the years, Crowley has converted most of its enclosed-equipment fleet to containers, which accommodate both its lift-on/lift-off and roll-on/roll-off services when paired with chassis.
   Since 2003, Crowley has invested nearly $240 million to modernize its equipment fleet by about 24,000 units and now has a fleet of 45,000 modern units.
  In April, Crowley added 250 45-foot containers and 250 40-foot high-cube boxes to its equipment fleet.
   One of Crowley’s competitors in the Puerto Rico trade, Trailer Bridge, pioneered the use of 53-foot containers. In 2007, APL began offering the large boxes to its transpacific shippers.
