Crowley awards annual scholarship
Crowley Maritime Corp. has awarded the Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarship to InterAmerican University student Juan Xavier Berrios Guzman of Barranquitas, Puerto Rico.
The award is presented to exceptional students who are selected for the scholarship by the Puerto Rico Department of Education based on academic success and financial need. Crowley has awarded 24 scholarships to students in Puerto Rico since 1984. Crowley chairman, president and CEO Tom Crowley Jr. has given hundreds of thousands of dollars to deserving students at select institutions from Alaska to Puerto Rico in the name of his father, Thomas B. Crowley Sr., who headed the company for decades before passing away in 1994.
Berrios will pursue a bachelor's degree in accounting with the long-term goal of becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). In thanking Crowley for the scholarship, Berrios also said he hoped to join the company following his graduation.
During his three years at Luis Mu'oz Mar'n High School he was a member of the board of directors of Cooperativa Juvenil Cem' Barranquite'a, a credit union administered by the students.
