Crowley buys 457 reefer containers, 380 gensets

Crowley Liner Services has bought 457 new 40-foot, high-cube refrigerated containers and 380 generator sets, which enable refrigeration to be maintained on overland transport and when no shipboard or quayside electricity supply is available.

   No financial details were disclosed.

The reefer containers will be used on Crowley’s services between the U.S. East Coast and South America, Caribbean and Puerto Rico.

“We are responding to the needs of our customers by making the necessary investments to allow them to be successful with their perishables shipments,” said Tom Crowley Jr., Crowley Maritime Corp.’s chairman, president and chief executive officer. “Refrigerated cargo is a large part of our business in both Central America and the Caribbean. Providing customers with clean, modern and reliable equipment is essential.”

All of the containers were made in China by Maersk Container Industri, part of the A.P. Moller-Maersk group.
