Crowley moves University of Puerto Rico solar house

Crowley moves University of Puerto Rico solar house Crowley Maritime Corp.'s liner services unit has successfully completed the move of a solar house made by the University of Puerto Rico, which is now on display at the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon competition in Washington, D.C.
   Crowley moved the solar house from San Juan to Jacksonville on a three-axle expandable double-drop trailer, on one of the carrier's triple-deck barges. From Jacksonville, the house moved over-the-road to the National Mall in Washington.
   The trailer assembly measured 72 feet long, eight feet, six inches wide, and 13 feet high. Crowley also provided two 53-foot trailers to transport parts and components for the house.
   The house is the university's entry in the contest. It is one of 20 entries designed and built by college students that are on exhibit at the National Mall through Oct. 20.
   “Crowley is a champion of education and a pioneer in environmental stewardship within the maritime industry,” said Rob Grune, Crowley’s senior vice president and general manager, Puerto Rico/Caribbean services. “We are glad that our expertise in moving cargo between the U.S. and Puerto Rico could be utilized by the university as they participate in an awareness campaign about solar power and energy efficiency.'
