The announcement from the CSA Friday followed a separate announcement from Seaboard Marine about the surcharge. Seaboard is a member of the CSA, along with Bernuth Lines, CMA CGM Caribbean, Hapag Lloyd America, Crowley Liner Services, Interline, SeaFreight Line, and Tropical Shipping.
The surcharge will apply to cargo movements between the U.S. and the Caribbean destinations Anguilla, Antigua, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Montserrat, Saba, St Barths, St Eustatius, St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, St Maarten, St Vincent, Trinidad, Haiti, Jamaica, Guyana and Suriname.
The CSA said that for all 20-foot containers the bunker charge will increase from $144 to $180. For all 40-foot containers, the charge will increase from $272 to $344. For equipment over 40 feet, the charge will increase from $309 to $390. For less-than-containerload (LCL) shipments the bunker charge on weight/measure shipments of 2,000 pounds/400 cubic feet, the charge will increase from $6.33 to $8.01. The same weight/measure increase will apply to vehicles over 700 cubic feet. For vehicles that are not over that size, the bunker charge will increase from $74 to $95.
The increase was based on the West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil price of $72 per barrel.
