CSI operations commence at Panamanian port

A team of U.S. border security officers is set up and helping to select ocean containers for inspection at the Port of Balboa in Panama, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Tuesday.

Balboa is the 52nd foreign port to participate in the Container Security Initiative, a program designed to push out U.S. borders through the assistance of foreign partners to inspect suspicious shipping boxes with non-intrusive machines prior to arrival in the United States.

Panama is a significant transshipment point for South and Central American cargo. The Panamanian ports of Manzanillo and Colon are also scheduled to begin CSI operations this year.
