CSI underway in Livorno
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers have begun working at the Port of Livorno with Italian customs authorities to inspect high-risk U.S. bound shipments.
Livorno represents the fifth, and final, Italian port to implement the Container Security Initiative, a bilateral program designed to check for terrorist bombs and weapons that may be hidden in ocean containers before they arrive at U.S. ports.
CBP teams have been operating at the ports of Genoa and LaSpezia since June 2003. The ports of Naples and Gioia Tauro became operational in the past three months.
CSI is now operational in 33 ports around the world.
