CSX launches Carbon Calculator
CSX Transportation has launched an online Carbon Calculator to provide shippers with a quick assessment of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of specific rail shipments and then compare with other transportation modes.
Citing numbers from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Jacksonville, Fla.-based company said shifting 10 percent of long-haul freight from the highway to rail would reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by more than 12 million tons.
'Rail is the most environmentally friendly and energy efficient land transportation option,' said Clarence Gooden, CSX’s executive vice president and chief commercial officer. 'This tool enables our customers and others to better understand the difference they can make — on a shipment by shipment basis — by choosing rail.'
The company’s Carbon Calculator can be accessed at www.csx.com/?fuseaction=customers.emissions_carboncalculator.
