CSXT to resume Gulf Coast service to New Orleans

CSX Transportation Inc. said Wednesday that it will resume its local Gulf Coast freight rail service to New Orleans early next month.

Over the past five months, the Jacksonville, Fla.-based company has restored to the Gulf region six major bridges, more than 40 miles of track, and its major rail yard in New Orleans.

“Industries and communities throughout the Gulf region depend on free-flowing rail service. It was critically important that we get the railroad back up and running as soon as possible,” said Tony Ingram, CSXT’s chief operating officer.

“We are incredibly proud of our employees and contractors for their tireless efforts to help bring the railroad and its economic benefits back to the region,” Ingram added.

CSXT has also launched a joint awareness campaign with Operation Lifesaver Inc., urging the Gulf region’s citizens to be alert at rail crossings, which have been largely inactive since Hurricane Katrina.
