Customs agents in Puerto Rico make record seizures Customs and Border Protection agents in Puerto Rico have seized a record amount of products that had extension cords with counterfeit Underwriters Laboratories (UL) labels.
         The CBP said last week officers in Puerto Rico seized counterfeit extension cords valued at nearly $350,000, the largest seizure ever of mislabeled cords. CPB's previous largest seizure of counterfeit UL extension cords occurred in 1997.
   The seizures are part of a wider program at all CBP ports of entry to detect goods with counterfeit UL labels. So far this fiscal year, agents have seized more than 100,000 pieces of products with counterfeit UL labels.
   Underwriters Laboratories Inc. is an independent, not-for-profit safety testing and certification organization that has developed more than 800 standards for safety. Millions of products and their components are tested to UL safety standards, and the UL labels are seen as a confirmation of product safety.
   Officers in Puerto Rico seized four separate shipments containing air-conditioning units and extension cords in violation of Intellectual Property Rights regulations.
   CBP said all the Puerto Rico shipments originated in China and were destined for local distribution.
