Customs official Heffelfinger to retire

William S. Heffelfinger, a deputy assistant commissioner at U.S. Customs and Border Protection, announced his retirement, effective June 30.

   As deputy assistant commissioner in the Office of Field Operations the past four years he was involved in all aspects of border security at ports of entry.

   In the legacy Customs Service prior to that, he served as an assistant to the commissioner where he where he headed the border coordination office and was responsible for coordinating border initiatives.   

   During a 38-year government career he also served law enforcement stints in the Treasury Department, U.S. Secret Service and Bureau of International Commerce.

   In 2005, he commanded a 700-person CBP contingent that deployed to the Gulf to respond to the Hurricane Katrina devastation.
