D.C. conferences to tackle transport funding

This week, attendees of the National Association of Manufacturers’ 2014 Manufacturing Summit and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s America’s Small Business Summit, both held in Washington, D.C., will focus on improving domestic transportation through legislation.
According to a joint press release, members of these organizations will press Congress to do something about the Highway Trust Fund crisis.
Jay Timmons, the president and chief executive officer of NAM, said transportation funding is a major priority.
“Manufacturers and their employees cannot afford delays or uncertainty in funding our nation’s transportation infrastructure because safety, jobs and global competitiveness are at stake,” he said in a statement. “A bipartisan solution is needed to ensure the Highway Trust Fund is returned to a condition of solvency and long-term sustainability.”
The NAM summit runs today and Wednesday.
Thomas J. Donohue, U.S. Chamber’s president and chief executive officer, said there also needs to be a focus on creating a holistic strategy to address transportation needs.
“It’s time to create a contemporary and innovative infrastructure strategy— one that embraces the private sector and its resources, invites the introduction of desperately needed fresh ideas and concepts, and drives economic prosperity rather than holding back the jobs, opportunity, and growth we need,” he stated.
America’s Small Business Summit starts Wednesday and runs through Friday.
