DAL, Safmarine suspend Durban surcharge

DAL, Safmarine suspend Durban surcharge

Deutsche Afrika Linien and Safmarine Container Lines are suspending the collection of the South African port additional surcharge for cargo moving through Durban, effective May 1.

The surcharge was introduced in May 2003 to offset costs incurred by the shipping lines due to the lengthy delays at South African ports of Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban. The surcharge was suspended at Cape Town and Port Elizabeth in August 2003 but remained at Durban.

“Over the last several months, the situation in Durban has stabilized and now improved to a level that requires a reassessment of this surcharge,” said Safmarine.
