DB Schenker wins BMW distribution contract

DB Schenker Logistics said Friday it is setting up a logistics center in Leipzig to supply components to BMW car plants in China and South Africa.

'It is one of the largest logistics projects we have ever acquired,' Karl-Friedrich Rausch, member of the DB Mobility Logistics AG management board for transportation and logistics, said in a statement.

The 63,000-square-meter logistics center is scheduled to be operational by mid-2012. DB Schenker will collect about 8,000 different car components, to be packed and stowed in containers to match delivery requirements. The center will also give sheet metal parts protective treatment for ocean transport through different climate zones.

The company estimates the center will handle roughly 50 containers daily, most of them to be carried by ship to the South African city of Rosslyn and to Shenyang in China, though some will be transported by rail.

BMW is building a new production plant in Shenyang and DB Schenker is already involved in the supply chain for that location, the company said. DB Schenker also handles BMW contracts in other countries, such as spare parts supplies in South Africa.
