DHL, Savi test GPS on LCL shipments

DHL, Savi test GPS on LCL shipments DHL and Savi Networks have teamed up on a pilot test to track cargo shipments from Hong Kong to Europe using GPS devices provided by Savi.
   The container set off from DHL's less-than-containerload gateway in Hong Kong to major European gateways on Feb. 14 aboard a Hyundai Merchant Marine containership. Cargo owners participating in the trial will be able to track their shipments via the Internet as they move westbound to ports in Germany and the Netherlands. More countries will be added to this trial, the companies said in a statement.
   The tracking device is linked to sensors within the box that “report on the security status of the shipments as well as environmental conditions inside the container such as temperature, humidity, shock, vibration and light.”
   The companies didn’t specify how many containers or shippers were participating in the project.
