DHS releases $150 million for port security    The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has released $150 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds for port security.
   The largest recipient of federal money is the Port of Long Beach with $7.78 million, followed by the Port of Los Angeles with $6 million. The combined haul for the twin ports, including money for several private terminals and two public safety agencies, is about $17.4 million.
   American Association of Port Authorities President and Chief Executive Officer Kurt Nagle said the funds would help ports protect infrastructure while creating jobs and stimulating the economy.
   DHS is also awarding $72 million in funds to improve transit security and $166 million for fire station construction.

Napolitano

   The grants were announced by DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano in Baltimore, where the Maryland Port Administration will receive about $1.3 million. It plans to use the funds for projects such as constructing permanent security guard facilities, building an enclosed facility to conduct vehicle screening, enhancements to a video surveillance system and equipment for an emergency operations center.
   The Port of Vancouver, in Washington, was awarded $481,000 for installation of security cameras and a secure wireless network to allow port security officers to monitor cameras while on patrol. The port also plans to purchase card readers for the Transportation Worker Identification Credential program.
