Diageo opens logistics hub in Singapore    Diageo, a leading manufacturer of beer, wine and spirits, has opened an $8 million logistics hub for the Asia Pacific region at a Singapore facility run by the logistics company IDS Group
   The new hub will be located at the IDS Group’s automated storage and retrieval system facility. Bottled product such as Johnnie Walker and Singleton will arrive at the center from Europe and will then be labeled, packaged and put through quality control checks before being distributed to the different markets including Korea, Australia and China.
   The hub is designed to grow in line with Diageo’s business, handling 3.5 million cases this year and 6 million cases in 2007. Eventually it will handle 8 million cases per year and have 80 workers.
   “Asia Pacific is a key growth market for Diageo,” said John Pollaers, managing director, Diageo Asia. “The setting up and opening of our logistics hub in Singapore is a complete overhaul of Diageo’s Asia Pacific supply chain.”
   Diageo will have a dedicated production hall for the automated labeling and finishing of its products. It said the new hub will cut lead times from production to point-of-sale from eight to 10 weeks down to one to three weeks.
