Dominican Republic joins CSI, anti-nuclear smuggling program

The Dominican Republic has agreed to enter two U.S. cargo security programs, the Container Security Initiative and the Megaports Initiative.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection oversees the CSI program, which is now in place in 44 ports around the world.

Both CBP and the Energy Department’s National Nuclear Security Administration administer the Megaports Initiative, which works with overseas governments to install non-intrusive inspection equipment to detect nuclear materials. The program is active in six countries and is in various stages in about 30 other countries.
