Durban terminal buys RTGs

Crane and container-handling equipment manufacture Kalmar said it received an order from terminal management company South African Port Operations for 12 electric rubber-tired gantry cranes.

The specialized equipment is used to stack containers higher and wider to better utilize available dock space. The RTGs will be used at the Port of Durban, with delivery for the first six units scheduled for spring 2007.

Electric power is used on the RTGs to replace hydraulics for moving the spreader assembly that lifts and lowers containers. A low-emission diesel engine provides overall power to the machine.

SAPO is a subsidiary of South African transportation conglomerate Transnet Ltd.
