Europe/Indian Ocean conference warns of “ISPS tax” surcharge

Conference Maritime de l’Ocean Indien, a small conference in the liner trade between Europe and the Indian Ocean islands, has warned shippers it will charge an “ISPS tax” following the implementation of the International Ship and Port Facility Security code of the International Maritime Organization on July 1.

The carrier group is believed to be the first to formally announce an ISPS surcharge, although the Far Eastern Freight Conference has already said it is considering such a charge.

Conference Maritime de l’Ocean Indien said it will release details of the surcharge port by port, and that the new charge will be applied with immediate effect.
