The commission alleges that Austria hasn’t properly accounted for public funds intended for the rail sector; since it is unaccounted for, this money, which is intended to support passenger rail services, could possibly be used for other transport services. The improper recording of public funds is a violation of financial transparency laws.
“This could distort competition, potentially giving an unfair competitive advantage to those receiving the public subsidies,” according to a commission press release. “Such a situation would be contrary to existing EU rules, which aim at establishing an efficient, non-distorted and competitive EU internal market for rail.”
