EVERGREEN, LLOYD TRIESTINO END DIRECT CALLS AT TRIESTE, SINGAPORE ON ASIA/EUROPE SERVICE
Evergreen and its subsidiary Lloyd Triestino will stop calls at the ports of Trieste, in northern Italy, and Singapore, on their joint weekly Asia/Europe FEM service. From the end of August, Singapore and Trieste will be replaced in the service by calls at Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia, and an eastbound call at Taranto, the southern Italian port hub. Eastbound calls at Jeddah and Port Kelang are also being dropped.
Lloyd Triestino is expected to serve Trieste by feeder over Taranto, instead of by the direct service.
The first vessel to commence the revised voyage rotation will be the “Ever Gifted,” departing from Tanjung Pelepas on Aug. 31 and Taranto on Sept. 27.
The FEM service uses 10 vessels of around 2,900 TEUs. The new rotation will be Kaohsiung, Hong Kong, Tanjung Pelepas, Colombo, Taranto, Genoa, Fos,
Barcelona, Valencia, Taranto, Port Said, Colombo, Tanjung Pelepas, Kaohsiung and Hong Kong.
The decision of Lloyd Triestino, headquartered in Trieste, to stop calling direct at its home port is controversial.
Trieste, a secondary Mediterranean port located away from the main container shipping arteries, will be left with just one direct mainline deepsea service, according to ComPairData, the online shipping database.
The re-routing of the Asia/Europe also represents another blow for the port of Singapore, which has been losing market share to neighboring Tanjung Pelepas.
