The South Jersey Port Corp. said Krzysztof A. Zarotynski, 57, of Cherry Hill, N.J., was fatally injured while standing on the dock below the crane while working at the Beckett Street Terminal in Camden.
The port said it was not releasing details of the accident until an investigation was completed.
In addition to the port’s own safety team, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office and the Public Employee Occupational Safety and Health Program under the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services will review the accident.
“Our deepest condolences go out to his family,” said Joseph Balzano, executive director of the port. “He was a dedicated and valued professional. I’ve worked with him for many years through all sorts of weather and challenges.”
The port said Zarotynski was the first SJPC employee to have been fatally injured at the port, though there have been several fatalities among seamen and longshoreman who worked private companies at the port. Two years ago a stevedore working for a private firm handling cargo at port facilities leased by the SJPC to Del Monte was killed in an accident, the port said.
