FDA denies hearing on X-ray inspections of food in cargo containers    The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has denied a hearing request to review the impact of X-ray inspections on food transported inside cargo containers.
   The FDA rules permit the use of X-rays produced by machine sources of 10 million electron volts (MeV) or lower to inspect food, providing that no food receives a radiation dose of more than 0.5 gray.
   Public Citizen contends that FDA has failed to demonstrate that the use of X-ray inspections is safe and requested a hearing with the agency to voice its objections. The FDA said the group 'failed to submit any evidence that would call into question the scientific validity' of the agency's rules for X-ray inspections of food in containers, and said the process has been 'thoroughly tested' by the scientific community to be safe.
