FEFC MAY INTRODUCE PEAK SEASON SURCHARGE

   The Far Eastern Freight Conference announced that it is considering the
introduction of a temporary peak season surcharge.
   Following a meeting of senior executives of FEFC carriers on Wednesday
(May 26), the conference reaffirmed its plan to increase westbound rates
from the Far East to northern Europe by $300 per TEU on July 1.
   The FEFC expects a traditional surge in westbound liftings during the
second half of the year, but this will be magnified this year by "an uplift
of millenium related imports," the conference said in a statement.
   The Asia-Europe conference did not indicate the exact time of the year
when the peak season surcharge would apply.
   A peak season surcharge has been in place in the transpacific trade for
two years.
