Parent company Deutsche Post promoted Mullen to its management board over the weekend to oversee operations for DHL Americas, Asia Pacific and Emerging Markets. Uwe Doerken was terminated as chairman and CEO of Deutsche Post's express delivery and logistics arm. His duties were divided between Mullen and Peter Kruse, who heads operations in Europe.
DHL said Mullen, who was chief operating officer for DHL Asia-Pacific, will replace Fellows as CEO of DHL Americas in addition to sharing the DHL chairmanship.
Fellows led the effort to integrate the former Airborne Express after DHL bought the company in August 2003 to gain a U.S. ground network to compete with FedEx and UPS. The company is investing millions of dollars in infrastructure to expand its delivery network and efficiency, but operating losses continue to mount higher than expected.
'With the strategy complete and the majority of the integration activities finished, I have asked John to take on another role within Deutsche Post World Net that will focus on other strategic projects,' Deutsche Post Chairman Klaus Zumwinkel said in a statement.
Deutsche Post is counting on Mullen to turn around DHL Americas after his success with building the Asia-Pacific network and with TNT Express.
