Fire closes Hudson River to navigation

The U.S. Coast Guard closed a two-mile section of the Hudson River Wednesday afternoon for several hours while local fire officials responded to a smoldering 4-million-gallon tank at a Poughkeepsie, N.Y., fuel oil facility.

The Love-Effron tank, located 40 yards from the east bank of the Hudson River, contains 3.5 million gallons of No. 2 fuel oil. Local officials report that the tank buckled, but there was no release of fuel at this time.

The Poughkeepsie Fire Department reportedly contained the smoldering as of 3 p.m., and was moving the fuel to another tank nearby. Press reports said that fire started because of welding work.
