First U.S. cherries arrive in China, approved by inspectors Chinese officials have reported that the first batch of imported U.S. cherries into the Asian nation has arrived safely by air.
   The Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau reported that the shipment of 216 boxes of California cherries passed local safety standards. California is one of the leading U.S. cherry-producing states.
   The local government inspectors have vowed to inspect each batch of imported cherries to ensure food safety for Chinese consumers.
   Last week, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine rejected three types of capsules and raisins from the United States. K-Max Health Products Co., CMO Distribution Center of America, Inc. and Supervalu International Division produced the products.
   Chinese officials have ordered local governments to tighten import monitoring of food products from the United States. Critics in the states believe the move is in retaliation for a spat of Chinese products imported into the United States, including tainted pet food and toothpaste, that have been the center of U.S. warnings and recalls.
