Portus Stevedoring, a private company that operates a 25-acre marine terminal at the Port of Jacksonville, said Thursday it’s expanding to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where it will invest more than $1 million in new technology and cargo-handling equipment.
Holding company Portus Services LLC recently acquired St. Johns shipping, a longtime stevedore at Port Everglades that provides cargo services to customers such as Frontier Liner Services, Interocean and Trinity Shipping Services.
In Jacksonville, Portus handles cargo for container lines, roll-on/roll-off carriers, heavy-lift operators and the U.S. military. It operates three warehouses on property.
Port Everglades is a fast-growing port with plans for on-dock rail to expedite intermodal cargo and deepening of its channel to handle next-generation vessels.
Portus was acquired in March 2009 by SteelRiver Infrastructure Fund North America.
