Four firms to build Jakarta container terminal

IPC, Mistui, NYK Line and PSA have agreed to jointly develop a container terminal at the Tanjung Priok Port in Indonesia.    Four companies have signed a joint agreement to build a new container terminal at Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Indonesian port operator IPC; Tokyo-based investment firm Mitsui & Co, Ltd. (not to be confused with ocean carrier Mitsui O.S.K. Line); Japanese liner carrier NYK Line; and Singapore-based port group PSA International Pte Ltd (PSA) will develop the 1.5-millon-TEU terminal.
The newly establish project company PT New Priok Container Terminal One (NPCT1) will be tasked with developing and operating the new terminal. The terminal’s planned overall berth length of 850 meters and 16-meter draft will allow it to accommodate the massive container vessels currently serving the global east-west trade lanes.
According to a joint press release from the group, due to the dramatic economic growth experienced in recent years by Indonesia and a subsequent rapid increase in container traffic, there is “an immediate need to increase the port capacity and handling capability” of Jakarta’s Tanjung Priok Port, the largest and busiest port in Indonesia.
The group added that “NPCT1 will also pursue the efficient reduction of emissions, and energy conservation and environmental protection activities as a green terminal by exploring the use of environmentally friendly facilities such as cold ironing.”
PSA will participate in the design, construction and operation of the New Priok Container Terminal One at Tanjong Priok port, its first project in the Republic of Indonesia. Along with its partners, the port operator plans to “leverage on its global expertise and experience in operating container terminals worldwide and in training skilled port professionals to develop NPCT1 into a world-class facility to support Indonesia’s growing economy and facilitate the expanding maritime trade.”
